Thompsons Coupling

FINALLY. A meeting after a long time.Apparently a lot of people were excited about this new type of coupling Harish came across on the net. Actually,it is absolutely awesome,but kind of sad that we will not be able to use it. Oh! and check out the video!! Its really cool!


The Thompson coupling is a type of universal joint that, unlike traditional universal joints, has true constant velocity between the drive and driven shaft. It consists essentially of two universal joints assembled coaxially and therefore also incorporates an advantage of the universal joint, no load bearing sliding surfaces. The Thomson coupling is the first constant-velocity coupling to have this property. The elimination of sliding surfaces is claimed to reduce energy losses, and improve longevity compared to constant-velocity joints. According to its inventor, Glenn Thompson, the coupling uses about 8 per cent less energy than an equivalent system.
